Yana Dzhumaeva and Daria Rechkalova were awarded winner medals
The team from Sverdlovsk region has made a good start in Limassol, Cyprus, which is hosting three tournaments at once: junior and youth competitions and European Sambo Championship on May, 26-29. The day before, on the first day of the event, the U18 juniors competed for medals. Our athletes secured two gold medals and bronze. Gold was awarded to Yana Dzhumaeva (U59 kg weight category) and Darya Rechkalova (U80 kg weight category) representing Yekaterinburg Sambo and Judo School of Olympic Reserve and "Rodina" Sports Club, and bronze was taken by German Sorokin (U53 kg weight category) from UMMC Sambo Club (Verkhnyaya Pyshma).
Daria Rechkalova was seemed to have no difficulties in defeating her opponents in the preliminary fights. She was so confident and powerful on her way to the final, scoring one early victory after another. The decisive bout for the title was also quick: it took her less than a minute and a half to defeat Ivana Gordic from Serbia by a painful hold.
Yana Dzhumayeva showed a rare intriguing final. She also seemed to be heading easily towards her expected triumph, but in the bout for the gold medal, she ran into fierce and active resistance of Sofia Bordinskikh of Ukraine. On the onset the opponent slightly discouraged Yana, and she was losing by the middle of the final with a score 0:2. In turn, the Ukrainian riding her wave of success, adventurously decided to repeat passing of the opponent’s legs, which had brought her the advantage before, but ran into counterattack of Dzhumaeva. Instead of taking a 3:0 lead, she suddenly found herself in guard. Dzhumayeva evened the score with a final efficient and better hold. Which followed by a 4-point "submission" to let her take a confident 6:2 lead a minute before the end of the round. The final score 6:3 on the scoreboard recorded a beautiful hard-won victory of the Russian wrestler.
Herman Sorokin lost his first bout to future gold medallist Maxim Babich from Ukraine, but then managed to take a well-deserved bronze in the repechage.
The youth championship is to be held today in Limassol. U20 youth juniors will take part in the competition. Ivan Lukanin (U79 kg weight category), Oksana Kobeleva (U54 kg weight category), Ekaterina Tsybert (U59 kg weight category) and Lyudmila Naletova (U72 kg weight category) from Yekaterinburg are representing Sverdlovsk Region.
