Petr Antonov was born in Sverdlovsk in 1946. He began practicing sambo at the Sports Club “Uralmash” under the guidance of the Honored Coach of the USSR, Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Kozlov. Later he joined the Sverdlovsk Council of the Voluntary Sports Society “Trud” and represented the Armed Forces of the USSR in competitions. In 1970, at the age of 24, he fulfilled the standard of Master of Sports of the USSR in sambo. He competed in the light-heavyweight and heavyweight divisions, reaching the peak of his career in the early 1970s.
His first serious success in sambo at the All-Union senior level came in 1971, when he won the bronze medal at the RSFSR Championship and the silver medal at the International Tournament in Uzbekistan. Two years later, he won the USSR Team Cup and took part in the USSR Championship in Maykop, where he reached the semi-finals in the light-heavyweight division and secured a bronze medal.
In 1974, Petr Antonov won the RSFSR Championship and the International Tournament in Uzbekistan. He also participated in the USSR Championship in Kaunas, where he once again reached the semi-finals and became a bronze medalist in the light-heavyweight division. For his outstanding sports achievements in sambo he was awarded the honorary title of Master of Sports of International Grade. He also had some achievements in judo, where he was awarded the title of Master of Sports in 1976.
While still an athlete, Petr Antonov graduated from the Sverdlovsk Technical School of Physical Education. After retiring as an athlete, he became a sambo coach.
Petr Antonov died in 1996. He was buried in the Eastern Cemetery in Ekaterinburg.
